Matt, who had recently begun his first season as the head coach of the White Hall High School boys’ basketball team, was 57 years old at the time of his death.
The fatal collision took place on South Hazel Street, near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, around 11:01 PM. According to the Pine Bluff Police Department, Williams was driving a white Nissan Altima southbound when his vehicle collided head-on with a northbound 2015 GMC Sierra driven by 30-year-old Daron Wim. The impact of the crash was catastrophic, and Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Daron Wim, the driver of the GMC Sierra, was ejected from his vehicle and rushed to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, and while no official cause has been declared, the loss of Coach Williams has already left a void in the hearts of many.
Matt Williams had only been with White Hall High School for a short time, yet his impact was already deeply felt by students, faculty, and the local community. As the newly appointed head coach of the boys’ basketball team, Williams had led the Bulldogs to a respectable 15-14 record, including a hard-fought 5-5 mark in the competitive 4A South conference. His journey in basketball began at Springdale High School, where he coached for several years, and later at Texarkana High School, where he had a notable tenure, leading the team to their first conference victories in over a decade during the 2021 season.
