Authorities Confirm Recovery of Missing Ashland Woman Found in Big Sandy River
KENOVA, W.Va. — The quiet community of Kenova and nearby Ashland, Kentucky, are mourning after a tragic discovery brought closure to a nearly two-week search for a missing woman. On Saturday afternoon, November 8, 2025, Kenova Police confirmed the recovery of a body from the Big Sandy River, later identifying the victim as 42-year-old Mompida Hay of Ashland.
According to authorities, Hay was last seen on October 27, when she was believed to have jumped from the Interstate 64 bridge that connects Kentucky and West Virginia. Despite immediate response efforts from multiple agencies, search and rescue teams were unable to locate her at the time due to challenging water conditions and strong currents in the Big Sandy River.
After her disappearance, crews from Wayne County, Boyd County, and the Kenova Police Department launched extensive search operations along the riverbanks and beneath the bridge, using boats, sonar equipment, and aerial support. Volunteers and family members gathered daily near the search site, praying for answers and holding out hope that she might be found.
Police Chief Charles McCormick confirmed that the body was discovered by a boater around midday Saturday, approximately two miles downstream from the bridge. The boater immediately contacted authorities, who quickly arrived to secure the scene. The body was then transported to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and autopsy.
“While this is not the outcome we hoped for, we’re thankful to finally provide closure for Mompida’s family,” Chief McCormick said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
Family and friends described Mompida as a kindhearted woman with a bright spirit and deep love for her community. Neighbors in Ashland recalled her as someone who was always willing to lend a hand or share a smile.
Investigators said there is no indication of foul play at this time, and the case remains under routine review pending the medical examiner’s final report. Authorities also expressed gratitude to all agencies and community volunteers who assisted in the search, acknowledging the tireless work of those who navigated the river’s difficult terrain and unpredictable waters.
The discovery marks the end of an emotional journey for Mompida’s loved ones, who have spent days organizing search parties and sharing her story across social media in hopes of bringing her home. Vigils are now being planned in both Ashland and Kenova to honor her memory and offer support to her grieving family.
As one family member shared online, “Mompida will always be remembered for her kindness and her laughter. She touched everyone she met and will never be forgotten.”
The Kenova Police Department urges anyone struggling with emotional distress to reach out for help, emphasizing that there are always people ready to listen and support those in need.
