Maryville Community Mourns Teacher and Coach After Tragic Single-Vehicle Crash on Forge Ridge Road

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Maryville community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kaitlin Burger, a beloved special education teacher and assistant girls’ basketball coach, who tragically passed following a single-vehicle crash on Forge Ridge Road on Friday evening, November 8, 2025.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. when Burger’s vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree near the intersection of Forge Ridge Road and Morganton Road. Emergency responders from the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, Maryville Fire Department, and THP arrived swiftly at the scene, but despite their best efforts, Burger was pronounced deceased. She was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate what may have led to the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that weather conditions were clear and road surfaces were dry, leaving investigators to explore whether fatigue, distraction, or a sudden medical event may have played a role. Officials confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Kaitlin Burger, remembered by colleagues and students alike as a compassionate educator with a heart for service, had been teaching special education at Maryville High School for several years. She was also known for her dedication as an assistant coach for the Maryville Lady Rebels basketball team, where she mentored young athletes both on and off the court.

The news of her passing has sent shockwaves through the Maryville City Schools system and the wider community. Superintendent Dr. Mike Winstead expressed deep sorrow, describing Burger as a “bright light who inspired everyone around her.”
“Kaitlin had a unique gift for connecting with students,” Winstead said. “She believed in every child’s potential and gave her heart to her classroom and her team. She will be profoundly missed.”

At Maryville High School, grief counselors have been made available for students, staff, and players struggling to process the tragedy. A memorial table adorned with flowers, photos, and basketballs now stands outside the gymnasium—an emotional tribute to a teacher and coach who left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Teammates of the Lady Rebels described Burger as more than a coach—she was a mentor and friend who encouraged them to stay strong through challenges. “Coach Burger always believed in us,” one player said. “She made us feel like family.”

The Blount County community has rallied together in support of Burger’s family, organizing candlelight vigils and fundraisers to honor her life and contributions. Friends say her smile and energy could brighten any room, and her commitment to education and sports made her a role model to many.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in the coming days. As Maryville continues to grieve, the memory of Kaitlin Burger’s passion, kindness, and leadership will live on in the hearts of her students, colleagues, and players.
