Morganton Man Japheth Obanner Passes After Being Struck by Vehicle on Highway 70

MORGANTON, N.C. — The community of Morganton is mourning the tragic passing of 29-year-old Japheth Jesse Obanner, who lost his life after being struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 70 in Burke County late Saturday night, November 8, 2025. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) confirmed the heartbreaking incident, which occurred near Snowhill Church Road, just outside Morganton.

According to investigators, Obanner was walking along the eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 around 11:15 p.m. when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene after several witnesses called 911. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by paramedics, Obanner was pronounced passed at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, who has not been publicly identified, remained on site and cooperated fully with state troopers. Early reports indicate that impairment or excessive speed do not appear to have been factors in the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, though the investigation remains active as troopers continue to review evidence and interview witnesses.

Authorities closed a section of U.S. 70 for several hours overnight while members of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit analyzed the scene. Traffic was diverted around the area until early Sunday morning. Officials are working to determine why Obanner was walking along the highway at that hour and whether visibility or lighting conditions may have played a role in the tragedy.

Obanner, a lifelong resident of Morganton, was remembered by friends and family as a kind, hardworking young man who loved helping others. He was described as someone with “a bright smile and a generous heart,” known for his willingness to lend a hand in his community. His sudden passing has left loved ones and neighbors struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” said one family friend. “Japheth was always smiling, always talking about his plans for the future. It’s hard to believe he’s gone.”

Local residents have since placed flowers and candles near the area of the crash in remembrance of Obanner. Several community members have also shared messages of condolence on social media, calling for better lighting and pedestrian safety measures along that stretch of U.S. 70, which has seen several accidents in recent years.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and Burke County EMS also assisted at the scene, providing support to both the investigating officers and those affected by the incident.

As investigators finalize their report, state troopers continue to remind the public of the dangers of walking along busy highways, especially at night. They urge pedestrians to use sidewalks, reflective clothing, or designated crossings whenever possible to prevent future tragedies.

Funeral arrangements for Japheth Jesse Obanner are being handled by a local Morganton funeral home and will be announced by his family in the coming days.
