Robert Violante Remembered: Beloved Bergenfield High School Coach and Mentor Among Four Killed in Tragic Taconic State Parkway Collision

It is with profound sorrow, heavy hearts, and a deep sense of loss that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Robert Violante. Affectionately known to many as “Coach V,” Robert was a cherished member of the Bergenfield High School (BHS) faculty and head football coach, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating car accident on the Taconic State Parkway in New York on May 14, 2025.

The accident occurred during Robert’s routine commute home, a drive that on this day turned into an unimaginable tragedy. According to reports from the New York State Police, a Sprinter van traveling southbound crossed the median for reasons still under investigation and collided head-on with a Honda sedan heading northbound. Robert Violante was the driver of that Honda sedan.

While emergency responders acted swiftly, the crash resulted in the deaths of four people, including Robert. Three occupants of the van died at the scene after the vehicle overturned and caught fire. Robert, critically injured, was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite valiant efforts by medical professionals.

At this time, only Robert’s name has been officially released. Out of respect for the families of the other individuals involved, we await further details from the authorities.

A Life Devoted to Service, Leadership, and Compassion

Robert Violante was not just an educator or coach—he was a leader, mentor, friend, and a central figure in the Bergenfield community. His career spanned over 15 years with the Bergenfield Public School District, where he made an indelible mark on students, faculty, and staff alike. Since taking over as head coach of the Bergenfield High School football team in 2011, Robert cultivated a culture of excellence, unity, and respect on and off the field.

Students recall how Coach V pushed them to be their best—not just as athletes, but as young men of character and determination. His players respected his discipline, admired his passion, and often looked to him for guidance that extended well beyond the gridiron. Whether it was helping a struggling student find motivation or staying late to offer words of encouragement, Robert’s impact was felt deeply.

“Coach Violante was more than just a teacher and coach—he was a mentor, a father figure, and a true friend to so many,” said Bergenfield Schools Superintendent Dr. Christopher Tully. “His dedication to the development of our students went far beyond classroom instruction or game-day strategy. He truly lived to serve others.”

A Pillar of the Bergenfield Community

News of Robert’s untimely death sent shockwaves through Bergenfield and the broader New Jersey education and athletics community. Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio issued a heartfelt statement, noting that Robert was “an icon of community spirit, someone who inspired generations with his tireless commitment to youth development, teamwork, and education.”

His reach extended beyond his role as a coach. Robert was known for organizing community outreach programs, spearheading charity drives, and even hosting mentoring events for at-risk youth. Former students, many now adults, remember him as someone who believed in them when others didn’t, who saw potential where others saw problems.

Social media and community message boards have since been flooded with tributes from former students, athletes, colleagues, and friends. Many recall his infectious smile, booming voice from the sidelines, and the way he celebrated every small victory with genuine joy.

A Sudden Loss That Leaves a Void

The suddenness of Robert’s passing has left the Bergenfield school community reeling. In response, the school district has mobilized grief counselors, support groups, and helplines to assist students and staff in navigating the emotional toll of this tragedy.

“To lose someone so integral to our school so suddenly—it shakes you,” said BHS Principal Melissa Carruthers. “He was the heartbeat of our athletics department, and beyond that, he was a friend to every student. We will be mourning this loss for a long time.”

The football field at Bergenfield, often a place of celebration and competition, has become a solemn memorial, with students placing flowers, jerseys, handwritten notes, and team photos in tribute to the man they called “Coach V.”

Remembering Robert: A Legacy that Lives On

In the days following his death, efforts have already begun to preserve Robert’s legacy. The Bergenfield Board of Education has announced plans to rename the high school football field in his honor—an initiative already receiving widespread support from the community.

“He gave us everything—his time, his energy, his wisdom,” said junior quarterback Jalen Thompson. “Naming the field after him is the least we can do.”

In addition, a scholarship fund is being established in his name, aimed at supporting students pursuing education and leadership training in sports management, teaching, or public service—fields Robert exemplified.

The Investigation and What Comes Next

The circumstances of the crash remain under active investigation by the New York State Police. While early indications suggest the Sprinter van may have lost control before veering across the median, officials have not ruled out mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or other contributing factors. Toxicology results and witness reports are pending, and the identities of the other victims will be released following notification of their families.

The lone surviving occupant of the van is currently hospitalized with serious injuries, and investigators are expected to interview them once their condition stabilizes.

As details continue to emerge, one thing is tragically clear: the loss of Robert Violante has left an irreplaceable void.

A Final Farewell

A memorial service for Robert is being planned by his family, with details to be released by the school district. The Bergenfield community is encouraged to come together to celebrate a life lived with purpose, generosity, and unyielding love for others.

In moments like this, words often fail to capture the depth of loss. But perhaps Robert’s own words—spoken during his last end-of-season banquet—can provide some solace:

“We don’t measure success by trophies or touchdowns. We measure it by how we treat each other, how we grow, and what we leave behind. If I’ve helped even one of you become the man you’re meant to be, then I’ve done my job.”

Robert Violante did his job—and so much more. His legacy of love, leadership, and loyalty will continue to shape lives for generations to come.
