ALMANOR, CALIFORNIA — The kayak fishing community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Ryon Mora, a 38-year-old angler from Ripon, California, who passed away during the Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) Kayak Series tournament at Lake Almanor on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

Incident Details

The tournament began under overcast skies with a light breeze. At approximately 6:37 a.m., BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray received a report of an unmanned kayak on the lake. BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, promptly responded to the GPS coordinates provided and located Mora in the water around 6:42 a.m. Despite wearing a personal flotation device (PFD), Mora was found unresponsive. He was swiftly brought aboard the BAM media boat, and CPR was initiated while en route to meet emergency responders. Paramedics met Mora at the dock at approximately 6:47 a.m. and continued resuscitation efforts for over 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. (The Bass Cast, SierraDailyNews.com)
